Holistic Dentist

I went to see the only holistic dentist in town. I was excited to find one. Unfortunately, things haven’t been going great. I’ve occasionally found that her attention to detail and follow up was lacking. I had half a metal crown that was damaged. I wanted to replace it with an all porcelain crown. She used that new same day crown technology. She’d told me that my original crown was too big, but that she can make it work. My first hint that something odd was going on was when she bonded it in without trying it on first to make sure it is okay. My bite felt off from that moment. She decided that the problem must be the next crown. She ground it down, but that didn’t help. I was still having trouble with the new crown. Then she ground that down. Now my problem is that the other side of my bite hits before the side where all the work was done and it hurts to chew. I don’t know what to do. Any advice? She is the only holistic dentist in town and I’d like to see someone who understands I don’t like metal dentistry.

Dear Elise,

Woman in a field of flowers

I am sorry for what you went through. First, I’m going to say that I think you are entitled to a refund from this dentist. She’d damaged your bite and it will take some work to get it back. When you do get your refund, I want you to see a dentist who will place your dental crowns with a temporary try-in paste. This way, when your bite is repaired, you can make sure it fits properly and your bite is healthy and sound.

I can tell you are worried about getting holistic dental care where you live. The thing is, you do not have to sacrifice competent care for the natural dentistry that you want. There are many dentists who are willing to give you metal free care. I would rather you see a dentist who can give you proper care, even if they’re not calling themselves holistic.
