Allergic to Many Dental Materials

I had some patch testing done and discovered I am allergic to multiple dental materials, including both metals and chemicals. This does explain some things. I’ve had problems with the areas around a couple of fillings. They were the silver kind. I wanted to get them replaced once the white ones became available, but my dentist blew me off. He said all the hype about mercury was overblown. I didn’t even know there was mercury in them, though now that I do know it kind of freaks me out. The reason I wanted them replaced was because of the itchiness I had in the area. I don’t think he is ever going to take me seriously, but I don’t think it is a good idea to leave something that is causing what I am sure is an allergic reaction. Is there any advice you can give me or materials I can show him that will help me to get him to take me seriously?

Laurie

Dear Laurie,

Before and after mercury free fillings

This isn’t going to be the best dentist for your needs. I would not spend your time trying to convince your dentist to see things your way. You are better off finding a dentist who is willing to work with you on your dental allergies. Some dentists will blow off those tests no matter how many pieces of documentation you show them.

If you want to replace your mercury fillings, you will not only want to do it with a dentist who won’t argue with you or even who is willing, but you will want a dentist who understands how to do a sanitary amalgam removal.

While your dentist may say that the whole “mercury thing is overblown” it is a known toxin. When it is removed, you wan tto make sure that your dentist can do it in a way that will prevent you from inhaling any of the mercury or swallowing any pieces of that come off in the process.

There are dentists who know a special procedure which can safely remove the fillings without you having to worry about the mercury. My suggestion is you look for someone who advertises as a mercury-free dentist or a biological dentist.
