Is Luster Premium Teeth Whitening a Safe Product?

I saw an advertisement for Luster Premium Teeth Whitening. I looked up its reviews and there appear to be quite a few really nice reviews. Because it is over the counter, I get a bit wary. I want to make sure it is safe by a professional first. Have you seen this product? Is it safe to use?

Dear Lizzie,

A woman putting in teeth bleaching trays

I am very glad you wrote. You are smart to check over the counter items, especially these days where we have so much international commerce. Almost anyone can put something online and sell it. While there are some legitimate over the counter whitening kits, this one appears to be phony.

The light they advertise is not strong enough to make any real difference. I think it is a prop, simply to make the user think it is causing their teeth to whiten quickly. The whitening ingredient is also a phony. What they call their super whitener is really just zinc oxide. This is a pigment which will make your teeth look whiter. Think of it like a temporary tooth paint.

My guess is that it received those great reviews from people because they were excited about how white their teeth looked from the pigment before it wore off. My suspicion is this is why they needed the fake light. The pigment will lighten the teeth immediately, which isn’t how real whitening works, so they use the light as a way of giving a legitimate reason why.

The safest way for you to whiten your teeth effectively is with professional teeth whitening. Your dentist can provide you with a strong whitening gel that you can wear in a whitening tray. This will be stronger than anything you can get over the counter, and you will be under the supervision of a dentist.
