What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is the use of sedative medicine to help you achieve a sense of calm before and throughout your dental procedure. Your ability to feel calm during treatment is important to us for two reasons. First, we prioritize your comfort and want you to feel positive about your dental care. Second, the body’s experience of pain is often intensified during times of anxiety. This phenomenon can cause your body not to respond to the novocain treatment you need to get numb before treatment.
Maybe you’ve experienced a situation like this before. If so, you’re not alone. In fact, our most anxious patients often have had some sort of negative past experience with dental treatment. No matter the source of your anxiety, we understand that it’s out of your control. And we want you to know that we have the tools needed to help you settle in to treatment peacefully so that you can do what’s best for your dental health — and feel good about it.
Types of Sedation
Nitrous Oxide
At Cameron Dental Studio, we offer two types of sedative medicine to customize your treatment to your individual needs and anxiety level. For mild anxiety, we recommend nitrous oxide, which is also commonly known as “laughing gas.” As you breathe in the nitrous oxide through the mask we place over your mouth and nose, you experience a carefree feeling as any present mild anxiety dissipates. By treating the anxiety, the nitrous oxide allows the novocain to work just as it should for a pain-free treatment. Conveniently, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off as soon as you stop breathing it in. So once your treatment is complete, you can safely drive yourself home.
Oral Sedation
For patients with stronger anxiety, we offer oral conscious sedation. With this treatment, you take a sedative pill before your appointment that puts your body in a completely relaxed state, which in turn promotes the success of the numbing agent we use to keep you comfortable. Though you remain conscious throughout your visit, it is likely that you won’t remember the procedure afterward. This fact is often particularly encouraging for patients who have had painful dental experiences in the past. It’s important to note that oral sedation will stay in your system longer than the length of your appointment, so you will need someone to drive you home after treatment.
Because you are totally conscious while under oral sedation — unlike anesthesia — you retain all of your natural reflexes, such as coughing when needed to promote better breathing. For an added layer of safety, we monitor your vital signs and oxygen levels throughout treatment with oral sedation.
Even for patients who don’t struggle with anxiety, oral sedation can be a helpful tool, as it allows you to tolerate longer dentist visits so that you can take care of multiple procedures in one appointment.
